The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. 17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The theme this year was "Women and Girls in ICT". Organised by POTRAZ, the commemorations for Zimbabwe were in Bulawayo, which included a march from the City Hall to the celebration venue at the ZITF. Following a welcome by the Bulawayo Metroplitan Governor, there were speeches from ITU, UN, POTRAZ and then the Minister of Transport, Communications, Hon.N Goche, introduced the Guest of Honour, Vice President Joyce Mujuru for her keynote address. The vote of thanks was by the Minister of ICT, Hon N Chamisa. There were also a number of stands displaying ICT products and services.
